Mary Jane Wilkie is an educator, teacher, writer, and business woman, drawing on a rich professional life of interacting with children, young people, and adults.
She began her working life teaching Spanish, and later became a music teacher. She has taught in situations as diverse as New York City and California private schools, Stanford University, after-school programs in the New York area, and a parochial school in eastern Bolivia. She is trained in music pedagogy, and has taught children as young as three and as old as seventeen to sing and play instruments. She has used music to teach languages, and has given music workshops to classroom teachers, and presentations to parent groups. Ms. Wilkie has held positions as Sunday school director and has run many Christmas pageants.
As a writer, she has published essays, op-ed pieces, service articles, translations of a book and short stories, and now, Music from the Trenches. She has created instructional materials and designed curricula for music education. She has taught children’s theatre classes, and written music for their performances.
Ms. Wilkie currently divides her time between executive recruitment for a youth-serving organization and teaching. She has created this website to share her thoughts and perspective with parents who wish to ensure a rich musical education for their children.
